Henrique named NHL Rookie of the Month

NEW YORK (January 2, 2012) -- Devils forward Adam Henrique, who led all rookies in scoring with 13 points (five goals, eight assists) and posted a +9 rating in 14 games, has been named the NHL Rookie of the Month for December.

Henrique edged Ottawa Senators defenseman Jared Cowen (2-7--9 in 13 games), Vancouver Canucks center Cody Hodgson (3-5--8 in 13 games) and Edmonton Oilers center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (2-6--8 in 10 games) for the award.

Henrique tallied points in 10 games, helping the Devils win 10 of 14 starts and climb to sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings. He recorded a pair of assists in regulation and the shootout-deciding goal in a 5-4 victory over the Ottawa Senators Dec. 8, extending his point streak to seven games -- the longest among all NHL rookies this season. He later tallied his third game-winning goal of the season, shorthanded, with a pair of assists and +3 rating in a 5-4 victory at Tampa Bay Dec. 12. Henrique rose to second place in the NHL rookie scoring race with 28 points (10 goals, 18 assists) in 34 games.

The 21-year-old Brantford, Ont. native was a third-round pick of the Devils, 82nd overall, in the 2008 NHL Draft. He played four seasons of major junior hockey with the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League -- a stint capped by back-to-back Memorial Cup titles in 2008-09 and 2009-10 -- and spent most of 2010-11 with the Devils' AHL affiliate in Albany, N.Y.

Henrique joins previous NHL Rookie of the Month honoree Nugent-Hopkins, who captured the award for both October and November.
